WAKS Lyrical is short for Wednesday Afternoon Knutsford Singers, but WAKS on its own didn’t work, so we added the word Lyrical to form the name of this smaller mixed-voice choir of around 35 voices. Music is varied from traditional pieces, through many different genres including songs from musicals as well as classic pop and easy listening arrangements. The choir sings in 3-part harmony: sopranos, altos and men.
WAKS Lyrical was one of our first choirs, starting its musical life in the summer of 2009. MAPSingers was already up and running and a few people drove across from Knutsford to join us in Poynton. As the Poynton choir began to grow, these keen singers asked if we could start up a similar choir in Knutsford, so we did and the rest, as they say, is history.
The choir is still going strong and several original members from the launch in 2009 are still singing with us. WAKS Lyrical have taken part in all of our wider community events and you can read more about these on our About page.
As well as giving concerts every summer and Christmas, WAKS Lyrical have also performed in some of Knutsford’s special events such as the Heritage Open Day organised by Knutsford Promenades in 2016 where the choir gave a concert with a music hall theme in the historic Royal George Hotel ballroom.
We were the first choir to sing in there for decades and it caused quite a stir when people saw the terrible state of disrepair the building was in.
We rehearse from 2.00pm – 3.30pm, starting with some warm-ups before moving onto songs.
At the end of the 90-minute singing session, there is the opportunity to chat with other choir members over a well-earned brew and a biscuit that is included in the price.
